Wangari Girls

Girls from 12 to 25 years were chosen to participate in the following activities according to their preference:

    * Making table mats (ebitambala)
    * Making baskets (ebibbo)
    * Making mats (emikeeka)
    * Making bead

* Making Bags out of polythene bags

With ten girls in each category, there are a total of 40 girls involved in the project. The crafts are cost effective as they are greatly needed in the local market and have cultural attachment in our region. Due to the fact that the girls develop their skills, the project has good community acceptance and leads to poverty reduction in our community.
Each craft group has two elderly mothers who have the knowledge, attitude and skills needed to make the items. These ladies supervise the girls to ensure they make quality items.

The Wangari girls’ project as a whole efficiently and successfully empowers each girl to become a full woman and allows the child to be a key player in community development.

Objective of the project

    * To equip girls with skills needed for their participation in community development
    * To enhance cultural norms and values among girls
    * To identify and advocate for girl issues in community development

The project is being implemented in Namusera Parish, Wakiso district, where poverty is one of the major challenges hindering girls’ development and participation in community issues. Poverty indicators in the sub-county include: prostitution; drinking hangouts for local brew; a large amount of idle people in public places such as markets; and a high crime rate characterized by robberies, home burglary, and pick pocketing.
